Class 50 diesels

Post by Deepol » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:46 pm

Some photos of my own and from the Nutter's Notebook of the Class 50 locos introduced in 1967 effectively sealing the fate of the remaining steam locos on BR. They came from the English Electric prototype DP2 but unlike her did not have the Deltic shape taking instead the standard front end adopted based on a Brush Type 4 later Class 47.

DP2 from an old cutting at by the looks of it, Waverley station. She had a sad end in 1967 being involved in the major accident at Thirsk.

D402 again at Motherwell in 1970. Jumpers now fitted in anticipation of double heading on the WCML.

Double heading started in May 1970 and lasted till full electric hauled services over the whole WCML commenced in May 1974. I was not personally involved with allocation of the locos but I worked alongside those who did. There were times when because of other commitments the pairs had to be split which didn't please those in the South! On the whole it did work and some fine performances were put up.

I never photographed the double headers much for some reason known only to me, just did timing logs instead so these are from the Nutter's Notebook. Thankfully others did photograph them.....

The Class 50s were transferred over to the Western Region following full West Coast electrification where they gained cult following. They also gained warship names. Some photos I took in those days.

A memory of DP2 on a Pullman service. Have been reminded that it's 50 years since the Thirsk accident when she was severely damaged.
