SMS expansion

Post by Bill Harvey » Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:15 pm

TRUEMAN on route to Bristol Channel and details of new company posted by Terry Thwaite on Tug Talk - copied below.

Company Name: SMS TOWAGE (BRISTOL CHANNEL) LIMITED
Registration Number: 07874065
Registered Office: FRANCIS HOUSE HUMBER PLACE, THE MARINA, HULL, EAST YORKSHIRE, HU1 1UD

Date of Incorporation: 07 Dec 2011

Will be interesting to see what joins her as normally a minimum of 2 tugs on larger vessels and I doubt another operator agreeing a joint operation.

There was a rumour a month or so ago that Forth Ports BEAMER had been viewed by east coast operators but then went quiet.

Maybe, but who knows? Watch this space.

Nobleman Just left Albert Dock Hull for Cardiff Still in Black and white colours with SMS logo on Funnels and Registered Hull
With no collours changed This looks like a charter or could be a joint venture between the 2 companies as previously said.
Have been told pilot is taking it down and bringing one back so Trueman could be returning.

Any idea of the reaction from Svitzer?
Something was mentioned on Tug Talk, but later withdrawn and can't be read.
The ABP Severn website shows tug operators as 'SMS Bristol Channel' ,and indicates that a page for 'Svitzer Bristol Channel' is 'under construction'.

Just being nosey, especially after seeing something similar happen when West Coast Towing moved into the East Wales Ports in the early 1990's.Must be getting old I guess when you see things apparently turning full circle.

That doesn't follow at all ..... one company can make a success where others have not.

They're certainly setting up shop in the Bristol Channel to take on Svitzer - I heard this from an SMS Master!

The W.C.T arrival in East Wales in the '90's led in a matter of months to the loss by Alexandra of the Port Talbot contract ,after which ACT's days in the Bristol Channel were numbered,so from little acorns an oak trees grew.

And when SMS set up in Hull I met their commercial manager who I seem to recall had come from South Wales, likely from Alexandra?

i wouldn,t call WCT ,s operations a flop. Unfortunately for Howard Smith and their employees , they took over all the Swansea/Port Talbot work, and were important enough to be bought out by Wijsmuller, and subsequently Svitzer. It appears that Svitzer are ignoring the East Wales ports when they need all tugs at Portbury>.The difference these days is that between all the Welsh ports, with the exception of Port Talbot tidal harbour, there are not that many tug "jobs" required. So will it be economically viable in 2012...WCT came to Wales in 1993/4, when there were more tug dependant ships using Welsh ports

Yes George,At the time of the appearance of WCT,Patrick Lyon, who I thinks now manages SMS, was the Swansea/Port Talbot manager for ACT/Ho Smith.

That's the man Brian, he appeared in my office in the port (Hull) to ask if they needed permission or a licence to operate, the answer to both was 'no' as ABP had never controlled towage here, although recognising that it was an essential service that had to be dependably and efficiently run.

Svitzer is still the largest I guess, more tugs here than SMS but they each have their contracts with different owners or berths and seem to each make an honest living with the traffic divided, as with other ports the deep-sea trade is in the doldrums and far less vessels need a tug than in former days (but expect them to be there when a Force 8 blows!). Also Joh Dean in Hull and Harvey at Grimsby mainly handling the smaller vessels in the more confined docks.
