U-995 TYPE VIIC/41

Built 25th. November 1942, Blohm & Voss, Hamburg.
Commissioned 16th. September 1943, Oberleutnant zur See Walter Köhntopp in command.
U-995 is part of the German Naval Memorial (Marine-Ehrenmal) at Laboe which is situated approx 19.5km north of Kiel on the eastern side of the Kieler Fjord.

About 40 years ago I visited the Deutsches Museum in Munich where they had a U-boat on display. I remember thinking how cramped it was. I got claustrophobic even though it was in a museum and not underwater. It must have been pure hell being the crew of such a ship.
