The SARH Company

Post by davidships » Sun Sep 18, 2011 10:09 pm

On the BERNARD GERLING page Sean asked about the Gerling family and Jaap noted that a founder of the company on 20-12-1870 was Henri Gerling. It might be interesting to pool what we know on the company generally, hence this new thread.

In December 1914, when SARH was bringing much of it's fleet over to the UK, wartime trading restrictions meant that they had to provide information about the company. They listed the Board of Directors:

Désiré MAAS - Chairman
L BULCKE - Managing Director
... AFICQ - Assistant Director
Aug. BULCKE (A. Bulcke & Co)
Louis GUTJAHR
Alph. de MONTIGNY (J P Best & Co)
W GROTE (Van Bary & Co)
... GERLING (Marshall & Gerling)
J L DEKKERS (Ruys & Co)

All were Belgian nationals, except Dekkers (Dutch) and Grote (German). In the latter case it was specifically noted that his shares had been deposited in the company safe and that no payments were being made to him.

In view of the links between SARH, URS & Letzer i am adding this current link.

http://www.urs.be

There is no significant historical info here, as all tug people will appreciate, but should be used more as a link to current operations for all interested in the bigger, and current, wider picture.

In fact, you could spend forever there, the info is very comprehensive.

Thanks for posting the above SARH notepaper David.

Could you explain the flag please.
Why are the SRH in upper case,
and the a in lower case with grave accent.

Also the order of text presentation seems unusual,

When originally formed in 1867, the title was just "Société" - Société de Remorquage à Hélice H Gerling et Compagnie. It became a "Société Anonyme" ("Co. Ltd.") in 1870.
