HMS Howe
Battleship, King George V Class
Laid down as Beatty on 1/6/1937 and launched by Fairfield Govan, Yard No 669, on 9/4/1940. Arrived 4/6/1958 at Ward, Inverkeithing for BU
36,727t standard; 42,076t deep load
745ft oa x 103ft x 32ft 7in at deep load
4-shaft Parsons geared turbines, 8 Admiralty 3-drum boilers, oil, 110,000shp giving 28 knots
10 x 14in/45 Mk VII (2 x 4 and 1 x2), 16 x 5.25in/50 QF Mk I (8 x 2), 32 x 2pdr pompom (4 x 8) and 2 aircraft
Crew 1422

Commissioned 22/8/1942 and took passage to Rosyth for her Radar installation
29/8/1942 completed and she then joined the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow for an extensive work-up
31/8/1942 provided distant cover for the returning Russian Convoy RA51 and to catch the Lutzow
24/2/1943 covered passage of Convoy JW53 and return
May 1943 docked at Rosyth
21/5/1943 left for Gibraltar to join Force H and support the landings at Sicily
June 1943 force H moved to Algiers and visited by King George VI
10/7/1943 deployed South of Sardinia
12/7/1943 divisionary bombardment of Trapani and the Islands of Favignana and Levanzo
After Operation Husky she returned to Algiers
9/9/1943 covered the landings of the British Airborne Division at Taranto
14/9/1943 escorted surrendered Italian Warships to Taranto
October 1943 joined the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow
November 1943 to Devonport for Refit prior to service in the Pacific
May 1944 passage to Scapa for work-up
June 1944 passage to Mediterranean
9/8/1944 arrived at Trincomalee to join the Eastern Fleet
24/8/1944 covered carrier attack on Padang, Sumatra
16/9/1944 covered carrier attack on Sigli, Sumatra
22/11/1944 joined the British Pacific Fleet at Ceylon
11/9/1944 arrived at Freemantle
5/2/1945 visit to Auckland
28/2/1945 left Sydney for Manus to operate with the US 5th Fleet
26/3/1945 took part in operation to neutralise the airfields in the Sakisham Gunto Group
May 1945 further operations in the Sakisham Gunto Group
2/6/1945 left Manus for Sydney
5/6/1945 arrived at Sydney and withdrawn from service with Fleet. She then proceeded to Durban for Refit
September 1945 visited Capetown and then returned to the UK
1946 Flagship of the Training Squadron at Portland
1950 Reduced to Reserve as HQ ship for Reserves at Devonport
1957 Disposal List
1958 sold to BISCO

Out and into the River stern first to cant at KG5 entrance. The tugs are very intriguing, any info on them very welcome.

This is the colourised photo of her on her initial trials as far as can be ascertained. This is in the Corridor at the Fairfield Heritage Centre on Govan Road. Her camouflage scheme did alter subsequently.

A stern view of her. She went to Rosyth from Govan and I think did her trials in the North of Scotland based on Scapa Flow.

She was broken up at Inverkeithing where she arrived on June 4th 1958.


Her bell was presented to St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

August sees the 75th Anniversary of her commissioning at Rosyth on August 29th 1942.
To commemorate this, author and maritime historian Ian Johnston will be giving a talk on her career at the Fairfield Heritage Centre on 29th August at 3pm. Tickets can be obtained through the Eventbrite website or the Events link on the Fairfield site or Facebook page.
