Richard With was considered to be the 'Father of the Hurtigrute'.

He was instrumental in setting up Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab on the 10th November 1881. They had previously purchased the ARENDAL built in Gothenburg in 1865 and renamed her VESTERAALEN and she initially operated from Bergen to Ports in Lofoten, Vesteralen and Senja. She was a great sucess and a second vessel, LOFOTEN was ordered. Both ships offered faster, more regular sailings to the North and in 1885 they won a mail grant, provided they called at Trondheim, on Northbound and Southbound sailings.

The first official Hurtigrute sailing was on Sunday 2nd July 1893 at 8.00 am from Trondheim and the rest is history!
Paul Hood.
