Saw her up at Ny Alesund on Spitzbergen five or six years ago when she was on her regular supply run to the Polar Research Station there.

These oldies where very fine and cosy ships to be on board. Unfortunitly they are very expensive to keep them sailing and because Hurtigruten is writing figures in red at the moment, it won't be long before the last two also will leave the Rute!

I must admit I like that class of ship as well.

We tried to go on one of them but I don't think any of the Cabins had private facilities.

Yes Paul, it has. About half of the cabins of LOFOTEN have shower and toilet! Also on NORDSTJERNEN but there you really don't have much place for two! Try LOFOTEN and ask for 214. The best cabin with a relative big bathroom.
I must have a cabin plan somewhere, try to copy it tomorrow if you like?

This was years ago Henk when we ended up on the Midnasol.

However next June we are Cruising on Oriana and visiting Norway again.

Cruise goes from Southampton to Stavanger; Flaam; Geiranger; Trondheim; Honningsvaag; Tromso; Andalsnes; Olden; Bergen and back to Southampton.

We are hoping for some sunshine this time as we have not been very lucky in the past!!

We missed out on the excusion to Geiranger when we were on the Midnatsol so we picked this cruise. We have visited Stavanger, Flaam, Olden and Bergen in recent times so it will be very nice to revisit the other's after a long gap.

If you would like to sail on NORDSTJERNEN, don't wait to long! Her next survey is 30-11-2012. For LOFOTEN 28-02-2014.

Try a trip end of MArch/beginning of April and have a look in the mountains above Tromsø like we did last time:

One of our Norwegian Friends used to sail on the Hurtigruten every Christmas after his wife died and we always laughed at his Postcards. The one that sticks in my mind was when he told us he had, had "A Codfish Dinner" on Christmas Day!

On Nov 11, 2013, at 10 p.m. the "Nordstjernen" with 21 persons on board ran aground at the northern spit of Storøy in the Karm Sound, west of Tonjer l/h. Two tugs failed to refloat the vessel on Nov 12 at 3 a.m. It finally could be refloated at 7 a.m. with the high tide.
The ship was pulled off by three tugs including the "Mega Mammut" and docked in Haugesund around 7.30 a.m. where the Haugaland and Hardangerfjord police boarded the vessel at the Garpaskjærs Quay to interrogate the crew and take drug tests of the bridge crew.
The ship suffered some damage but was not leaking. The Norwegian Coastguard deployed the patrol boat "Ålesund" which was monitoring the situation since 1 a.m. and a Seaking helicopter, the NSSR the lifeboat "Bergen Kreds" which in vain tried to pull the "Nordstjernen" off at 11.30 p.m.
