Joliffe leg - early paddle steamers

Post by yorkieman » Sun Oct 28, 2012 3:24 pm

Recently had an enquiry which revolved around a sailing barge being sunk after being struck by the 'Joliffe leg' of a passing paddle steamer .... it has been established that this was some sort of projection from the paddle box. The incident was in 1853.
Has anyone come across this expression and may know what its purpose was?
