A public poll is underway to canvas names for two new CalMac ferries, due to start operating on the west of Scotland in 2018.

The poll, organised by ship enthusiast group CRSC, sets out six possible names for each of the two new 100m ships, which will serve Arran and the outer Hebrides.

Details of the poll have been published in a CRSC electronic letter, which is being circulated to islanders and other followers of the west of Scotland shipping scene. The poll is also advertised on a wide variety of Scotland-related Facebook pages.

A spokesman for CRSC said the naming of ferries serving west of Scotland communities was a subject of intense public interest, and it was important to keep alive traditional names with local appeal.

The £97m contract to build the ferries has been awarded to Port Glasgow shipyard Ferguson Marine.

A final decision on ferry names will be made by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), the Scottish government-funded organisation which leases ships on the Clyde and Hebridean network to an operating company, currently CalMac Ferries Ltd.
