ABERTHAW FISHER: Ailsa Troon 1966

Post by Deepol » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:27 am

A favourite ship of mine, I used to see her quite a lot when she came into Princes Dock in the 1970s to load large crated parts from Babcock's at Renfrew for new power stations being built round the British coastline. I also seem to remember a photo of her bringing the top part of the Longannet chimney exhausts to the Forth.
In 1990 she was renamed NATIONAL GENERATION reverting to ABERTHAW FISHER in 1992. She was converted to a mining dredger in 1996 being renamed MOONSTAR and was scrapped as that in October 2000 in India.
Her Aberdeen built sister KINGSNORTH FISHER is also away now being broken up at Alang as NEW GEN in December 2001.

Vaguely recall them coming in to Ardrossan with bits for (presumably) Hunterston. Sadly no photos then. Also didn't realise they were Troon-built. That's my learning snippet for today!

She did a lot of work via Goole for local power stations, here she is in a photo by Charlie Hill.

Sister KINGSNORTH FISHER was from the Hall Russell yard.
