This appeared in most broadsheet papers the next morning
QueenElizabeth-overhaul.possibilityFeb65.jpg
First intimation in February 1965
Unlike today, December 5th 1965 was a bright, cold and slightly snowy Sunday when this small gathering of folk on Gourock Pier watched as she slipped past that late morning to anchor off Greenock Esplanade preparatory to entering the fairly new Firth of Clyde Drydock for a 3 month overhaul refurbishing many parts of her to make her suitable for cruising given the decline of the Transatlantic service passenger numbers.
This was her first visit since 1946 when, following the end of War Service she was brought to full Cunard splendour, again anchored off Greenock.
