BRITISH SPIRIT 1983 Scott- Lithgow Port Glasgow

Post by Deepol » Tue Feb 07, 2012 1:32 pm

The Port Glasgow yard had the honour of completing what was to be the last BP tanker Clyde built and also the last complete ship to come from the yard before it went over completely to offshore oil construction.
The yard at that time had just become part of the Trafalgar House Group and BRITISH SPIRIT, one of a group of 100000tonners ordered from Belfast and the Tyne was considered a structure rather than a ship hence the unpainted appearance at her launch which was traumatic to say the least having great difficulty when entering Inchgreen Drydock.
There were other delays, not all the builders' fault and she took about a year from launch to delivery. However, as far as I have heard she was a very good ship and BP kept her till 2002 when she became OCEAN POWER on sale. Another 8 years lay ahead and as POWER she arrived at Chittagong on October 4th. 2010 for scrapping .

Finally looking like a BP tanker. Think her sisters were SKILL and SUCCESS.

Coming back from trials in December 1982. Never keen on the blue anti fouling colour. QE2 had that also.

I did- I always thought the Tyne one was SUCCESS but I see she and SKILL both came from Harlands. I have photos of BP ACHIEVER somewhere being renamed.

Got them! So, for the record......
