Forth Road Bridge - 50th Anniversary of Opening

Post by Allan » Sun Aug 31, 2014 8:58 pm

Fascinating programme on BBC1 tonight, marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Forth Road Bridge.

The programme features among other things previously unseen footage documenting the construction of the bridge.

In particular, film (and narrative) confirms the non-existence of health and safety regulations as we know them today; loved the response from those who were there – “common sense prevailed”

Also, they did not have computers – used “7-figure log tables…” in the construction plans.

Worthwhile watching on catch-up if you missed it.

Health & safety?
How right they were, Allan.
I worked on a TV programme just before the opening and someone negotiated an unthinkable perk for the crew.
Eight of us took the opportunity. Herded by one of the riggers, we climbed up the south first lower pier then walked the main cable working track up to the top to the main south tower, then all the way to the north pier where we descended by lift to river level and boarded a ferry back to the shore. Wouldn't happen now.
50 years ago? Can't say it seems like yesterday. Wish I could remember the ferry!

Fabulous pics Paul – many of which illustrate the point of (lack of) health and safety – back then of course, it hadn’t been thought of!

As the chap said in the documentary - common sense prevailed in those days.
