Nice pics Paul, thanks for posting.

Slightly disconcerting to see her being “tug-assisted” – remembering last year she made her own way down to Garvel, achieving 13.5 knots…

Nevertheless, I wish her all the best for 2019.

Just going down to JWD for boiler maintenance and an MOT Allan before the start of the season. Unfortunately she will not be calling at Helensburgh this season due to neglected maintenance of the pier by Argyll & Bute council, this is an ongoing issue and there will be a meeting at the pier on Sat.20th. April at 11.00am. There is a lot of angry people in Helensburgh at the moment!

Thanks for the info Riverman - feel a bit better.

However, no calls to Helensburgh "this season" is a long time - I share your anguish.

There will be a coach connection with Kilcreggan where there will be additional calls, however this is certainly a poor substitute for calls at Helensburgh.

Good for local business in Kilcreggan but may cause parking congestion as it is fairly limited at present.

Good to see PS WAVERLEY back on home turf at the Science Centre – from figures available, appears to have made around 12-13 knots on the journey back from Garvel on Sunday.

Been at Garvel since Saturday 13th April – longer than normal, or due to Easter holidays?

Been announced Waverley will not be operating May, June and July due to boiler issues.

This must be a serious setback for Waverley Excursions.

As an indicator, their comprehensive sailings schedule for 2019 is made up of 66 pages – if sailings for May June and July are cancelled, that takes out the first 34 pages – that represents 50% of their year’s business…

Probably an obvious question, but do we know why the boiler problem means such a long period of inactivity?

No idea the boiler problem at this stage, only heard she needed extended boiler works whatever that entails.

A sad day in the history of this vessel – but she is more than 72 years old (using her launch date, she’s 24 days younger than me) – we all have our downtime, and a lot of us recover – so I would like to think there’s life in the old dog yet.

According to a report on BBC Scotland News last night, the cost of the necessary repairs could amount to £2 million pounds – that’s a lot of money.

But let’s break this down – 50,000 donations each of £40 gets us there, as does 20,000 of £100, or 5,000 of £400 or any permutation in between – and that’s ignoring the 20% tax relief element.

I’m assuming like me most of the readers of this website have connections to the Clyde, and by reference to living memory, to PS WAVERLEY – so to those of us who can, let’s do our bit to keep this historic element of the River alive.

The Babcock boiler hasn't really lasted all that long considering the vessel is not in service between mid October and April/May. Maybe we should also be looking for a contribution from the manufacturer?

The Babcock Boiler fitted in 1981 was replaced in 2000 by two Cochran Thermax boilers. So both of these systems lasted 19 years.
