SAPPHIRE 1966 broken up

Post by yorkieman » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:16 pm

Sad to note that Robertson's SAPPHIRE of 1966 by Ailsa has gone for breaking at Aliaga as NISSIROS, arrived 27/04/2014.
Are any of the fleet left in trade now?

Yes - a particularly sad event for me - my late Father's command before Stevie Clarks took over, and she was the ship that went to the rescues of the Barra Lifeboat when it capsized. Spent some happy times on board that ship, great crowd, lots of banter, plenty Irish humour. I had notions of going over to see her, where she was lying, but it was not to be and in any event would have broken me to see the mess she was allowed to get into as the NISSIROS and previous names. A good servant to Robertson's.

In answer to your question, I am unaware of any original Gem Line vessels still extant under any flag, but could be wrong in that regard.
