WAVERLEY 2014

Post by alasdairmac » Sun Mar 30, 2014 2:21 pm

I see from WEL's Spring newsletter that Campbeltown pier is going to be closed for repairs this year and that they are going to have to rescedule, including for the WI transits to and from Oban. How much of a problem will the latter be, given that Colonsay was already a five hour steam from Campbeltown. What are the practical options to keep within the 6 hours at sea limit without increasing the overall transit time and distance (and cost!). Brodick and Port Ellen?

PS: wasn't too far out - it's changed to Lochranza to Port Ellen on the way north

I believe they are recruiting for the CEO now.

Heres hoping its someone with no "previous" of the ships or companies - that way theres a chance of them making a positive mark.

TICKETS AVAILABLE

Post by alasdairmac » Mon May 12, 2014 11:50 am

Due to illness, my travelling companion for the Thursday 29th and Friday 30th May sailings from Kyle of Lochalsh has had to call off. His tickets for both sailings are therefore available. They are "Senior Citizen" fares: £27 for the Cruise to Loch Torridon on the 29th and £23 for the Round Raasay on the 30th. First reasonable offer accepted.

He also a single room booked at the Dornie Hotel for the nights of 28th to 30th incl at £35 per night B&B which is available if wanted. I am also willing to give the purchaser a lift to and from Dornie & K.o.L. and the Central Belt on a petrol-share basis.

Please PM me if you are interested.

Updated 20th May - the hotel room is no longer available

Making good time on her way down the Firth and the weather looks fine for her first taste of the Atlantic this year when she rounds the Mull of Kintyre. Looking forward to seeing her at Kyle of Lochalsh tomorrow evening and to Thursday's and Friday's sails.

Sad news on the PSPS website

http://www.paddlesteamers.org/national/ian-mcmillan/

During my time involved with the ship I met Ian but never knew him well. All I can say is that the man selflessly gave his time to both Waverley and Balmoral both onboard and ashore.

Lest we forget.

Very sad news Gav. In spite of this Scottish name Ian was, of course, a Bristol Channel man with his early involvement in coastal passenger steamers being with the famous white funnel fleet founded by Peter and Alex Campbell, the sons of the Victorian Clyde Steamer operator Capt Bob Campbell of Kilmun. However, when Ian decidedto embark on an engineering career it was to the Clyde shipbuilders Scotts of Greenock that he came to serve his apprenticeship. I first came in contact with him when he got involved in the MV Prince Invanhoe in 1981. Later Ian was Waverley Heritage Rebuld project director and, later still, Chairman of Waverley Excursuion. I was privaleged to compile, together with the late Dr Joe McKendrick, the two editions of the Waverley heritage rebuild book 'Rebirth of a Legend' as a result of which I gained an insight into the extent of the researches that Ian McMillan undertook and his resultant knowledge of the almost forgotten experience ofbuilding paddle steamers. He also shared my interest in the Swiss Lake paddler steamers, particularly those on the lake of Lucerne and I'd often bump into him and his wife out the around this time of year. The untimely death of Ian McMillan leaves a big gap in the availability of expertise in ship preservation
