QE2 May be Scrapped

Post by SCameron » Thu Oct 18, 2012 12:41 pm

Local media in the Southampton area is reporting that the former Cunard flagship, the Clydebuilt RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 may be sold for scrap in the near future as the plans to use her a floating hotel in Dubai are unlikely to come to fruition.

No big surprises there.

Pointed out on another forum that the paper mentions her being drydocked which surely unusual for a vessel destined for scrap.
Another comment posted - "She has had a crew change because her management has changed to a company from Singapore and she is going to become a hotel ship in Asia somewhere."
Perhaps wait to see what happens to the old lady.

A group in London had bid the same £20m for the ship (another £60m available for refitting etc) with the backing of George Osbourne and Boris Johnson to have her as a floating hotel on the Thames opposite the O2 Arena, however they could not finalise the bid as they had to apply for planning permission - quite pathetic really.

Also, I could be wrong but as she has been lying for 4 years she will have to be inspected by towing/class surveyors (insurers) and given a Loadline exemption for the tow. May also have sea chests/suctions/discharges etc plated over and welded up.

Cunard contacted by the Shipping Times and they say no truth in the scrapping article posted by the Daily Mail, a link to it here. http://www.shippingtimes.co.uk/item_10443.html

Interesting intervention, but Cunard do not own her and neither they nor those who are angered/emotive by the story will have any influence whatever re her future.
No matter how you see her, she is a 43-year old outdated passenger liner which is very unlikely to sail again commercially, and maintaining a ship even as a static hotel or whatever takes a lot of cash which needs a good revenue stream.
If her illustrious predecessor had not been gutted by fire, would she still be around in 2012 .... very unlikely. The MARY is fortunate indeed to have had a safe haven to date.

New Report in today's Daily Mail,, saying that the QE2 will now be taken to Asia (exact destination "unknown") to become a floating luxury hotel.

Think we should await confirmation.....
