The Lower Reaches at Work

Post by Deepol » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:41 pm

We have Glasgow at Work but I don't see a section for the Lower Reaches. I'll start this off and if I've missed anything I can always transfer the pics.

Once a regular feature on the Greenock waterfront we have the ADMIRAL FITZROY.Built in 1944 as the AMBERLEY CASTLE (K386). and after her convoy escort duties she was at first laid up and in 1957 converted to a weather ship and given the name WEATHER ADVISOR this being altered after refit in 1960. Builders were S P Austin & Son Ltd Sunderland and she went to Troon 1982 for breaking up.

More naval visitors from the past at Greenock. The Dutch destroyer ZEELAND alongside the cruiser DE ZEVEN PROVINCIEN. I stand to be corrected but I think she was latterly classed as a missile ship before being sold to Peru ?

The big STAR bulkers were always interesting to see at GOT and although personally never seeing any close to enjoyed seeing others' shots of them.
These are some given to me by Ronald Holmes on the old Clydesite. Firstly STAR GRINDANGER.

Alva Shipping Company's new tanker at Inchgreen in February 1979 for pre delivery work from her builders, Cammell Laird.
She was one of a standard series, StaT 55 I think they were designated which CL were marketing. I think she had a sister as well.
She was sold in 1988 becoming HALIFAX and as PRINCESS was one of five ships in one of the largest drydocks at Dubai when on March 27th 2002 the dock gate collapsed flooding the dock with the loss of 35 lives. She was subsequently broken up following this tragic incident.

A bit off topic but a photographic narrative of this tragic event can be found (in pdf format) at http://www.ibew230.org/graphics2/dry_dock_disaster.pdf
