Ellerman's medium sized general cargo liner FLORIAN passing Customhouse outbound. Taken by Donald Robertson in March 1958. She came from Gray's at West Hartlepool in 1955.
Ellerman sold her in 1971 when she became MALDIVE LOYALTY and was scrapped as that on Gadani Beach in November 1982.

Two photos of the ore carrier BEECHWOOD changing identities. She was originally BISHOPSGATE built at Laing's in Sunderland for Silver Line in 1960 and sold on to Jacobs in 1969. She was sold to Greek owners in 1975 becoming NICOLAS C. then in 1976 CAPITANO FRANCO V for Italian owners. She sailed till November 1986 when she went to Italian breakers.

Thank you for posting this. It reveals a lot.
A question or few. Answers from everybody please.
I'm aware that, in addition to the Clydeholm yard, Barclay, Curle had two facilities at Elderslie.
I understand that the West yard in Elderslie was in operation from 1912 to 1930.
The Dockyard was in operation from 1931 to 1975.
So the questions start.
1) Was the West yard for new-build or was it similarly a repair yard?
2) Was the Dockyard exclusively for repair work?
3) If either of these yards laid down a new vessel, does anyone have the briefest mention by name?

Swedish ore carrier arriving at General Terminus in its early days.
Actually an ore-oil carrier she was built for the Grangesberg-Oxelosund Company by Gotaverken in 1974.
Remarkably she passed to British registry in 1972 as ATHELCROWN and as that was scrapped at Kaohsiung arriving there on 19th May 1975.

Thanks for posting this. There is so much detail of the river infrastructure down to the Harland & Wolff & Fairfield Cranes. All gone, of course and it makes one think why a river trip from Bridge Wharf during this time was not made more of. But I guess that the phrase "You don't know what you've got 'till its gone" applies. My previous favourite Clyde photograph was one of the Denny built MV Melbrook being fitted out at Stephens. This one is now No 1 for me. Thanks again. Iain

The former Harrison STATESMAN in Yorkhill Basin in 1977 in the process of handing over to her new Chinese owners becoming JIAN CHANG. She was built by Lindolmen in 1964.
Sadly she foundered on a voyage from Singapore on November 1st 1990.
I'm sure another of her sisters changed hands in Yorkhill as well.

I've had this on the computer for a while now and rediscovered it when searching for something else. A review pic from http://www.pixstel.com featuring slides taken round about June/ July 1962 by Willie Work a member of the Clyde Shiplovers and Modelmakers' Society as was then.
They are superb and can be purchased. A search for William K. Work will throw up some absolute gems.

Aerial view from an old Glasgow's Docks supplement from the late 1950s-early 1960s showing Govan Drydocks with a Henderson and possibly one of the South African frigates built by Stephen's undergoing attention.
Next is Harland and Wolff's basin with one of the five BI B Class fitting out whilst across the river two Anchor Line ships are at Yorkhill Quay.

RE PAUL'S POST OF 6th FEB 2014- WILLIE WORK'S PHOTOGRAPHS

Paul refers to the photographs of Willie Work on the PIXSTEL Website. I visited this site today and was truly enchanted by the quality & variety of his Clyde photos which seem to date from the 50,s & 60,s.

For those member who have missed this post, or just not visited the site I strongly recommend that you do so immediately.

I guarantee that you, like I will be glad that you did.

Best wishes to all.
