ATLANTIC CONVEYOR

Post by Deepol » Thu Oct 06, 2011 10:25 am

ACL container ship off Gourock in September 1987 following her lengthening. The section was built by Lithgow's and would have been their last ship contract as such.
ATLANTIC CONVEYOR was built by Swan Hunter in 1985 taking the name of the Falklands casualty also built by them in 1970.

Atlantic Conveyor on trials from Swan Hunter in 1984, showing her flight deck. The flight deck was designed to be road-portable to any port in the UK within 24 hours, and fitted in a further 24 hours. From memory I think our trial fit took slightly longer than 24 hours. I believe that this was the only time that the deck was fitted - proposals to call-up Atlantic Conveyor for exercises always seemed to over-ridden by commercial priorities. Other additional features to suit her for military service included improved subdivision and provision for military communications equipment.

Very intriguing and interesting indeed. Never realised she was considered for military service.

Would have been interesting I'm sure for you if you had one of those as a diversion from Liverpool!

I rank these as the most unphotogenic of all ships! A featureless bow or a big ramp on the stern.
Here she is passing Terneuzen on 08/07/2009.

Memories of the Swan Hunter 1970 ATLANTIC CONVEYOR sadly lost during the Falklands Campaign.

We had a WSS visit to the new one whilst she was building a Swans and I remember looking down from the Bridge to the dock and thinking it was a Very, Very, Very long way down!

Sister ship the Atlantic Companion visited the Clyde a couple of weeks ago. After getting all the nutters excited, she about turned at the Cumbrae. Turned out she was only dropping off her Liverpool pilot who couldn't get off at the Isle of Man because of the weather.
