Destined to be the last- 46256 SIR WILLIAM A STANIER FRS

Post by Deepol » Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:24 am

46256 was a development of Stanier's Coronation Pacifics by his successor HG Ivatt. She and 46257 CITY OF SALFORD were introduced in 1947 and 1948 Sir William just getting LMS No. 6256 and no more before Nationalisation. The main visual differences were the cut down cabs and reversing column which was drum and wheel in the cab which later became norm on the BR Standard locos.
When the remaining members of the class were withdrawn en masse in September 1964 46256 was kept to work an RCTS Scottish Lowlander railtour and she brought this back to Crewe for the last time bringing to an end the era of Stanier Pacifics on BR. Thankfully there are examples of both Princess Royal and Coronation Pacifics preserved for all to see.

Sir William at the naming ceremony for No. 6256 at Euston. On display as well was the shape of the future, diesel 10000.
I've never really found out if 6256 and 46257 were already planned and modified or if they were extras to the Coronation/ Duchesses designed by Mr Ivatt, Sir William's successor.
