Record run

Post by Deepol » Thu Apr 26, 2012 10:24 am

On 5th September 1957 a high speed run was made between Carlisle and Euston with that morning's Up Caledonian from Glasgow Central. It was kept fairly quiet and unfortunately none of the train recorders of the time were on board so details only emerged from the guard's log and signalbox passing times.
The train was worked by Coronation 46244 KING GEORGE VI and from passing Crewe the 158 miles to Euston were run in 118minutes, the train arriving some 37 minutes early into Euston. Average speed from Carlisle was 73mph and from Crewe 79mph.
Sadly the train's schedule of 400minutes for the 401miles from Glasgow to Euston was never improved as a result of this and was actually lengthened as WCML electrification work and Euston rebuilding started in earnest.
