71000 DUKE OF GLOUCESTER

Post by Deepol » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:36 pm

Three shots of the solitary BR Class 8 Pacific built as a replacement for 46202 lost tragically in the Harrow disaster of 1952.
As she is today, then what was nearly the end at Barry scrapyard and finally the official BR photo. from my collection.

Indeed, although the Harrow and Wealdstone crash of 8 Oct 1952 saw 2 engines destroyed.
46202 Princess Anne, class 8P 4-6-2
45637 Windward Islands 5XP Jubilee 4-6-0
Both were double headed together on the down line that fateful day.

A BR pic of her out on a test train with the Indicator Shelter installed on the front. This housed operators who measured piston and steam pressure on a rolling graph and by all accounts was very uncomfortable. I see on the shelter has been chalked "Positively the Last Appearance!!"

Found this amongst my files, a super mag cutting of a pacing shot of 71000. I've no other details unfortunately.
