Paul, I think there are about 6 of this class already constructed. For modern cruise liners they are not bad looking.

Yes, I was quite pleased with QV on Thursday. Thought her funnel was quite OK much better than the apology on QM2!!

Certainly not bad looking, Paul. There is a relativity all around the shape including the funnel. Not so with C.SOLTICE....

Wasn't she originaly supposed to be Queen Victoria?

She was indeed originally meant for Cunard as QV but they fought against it and eventually won the day. Arcadia's funnel is actually the Cunard design minus the side panels. Only immediately obvious difference apart from the funnel is the lengthened centre superstructure section, from which the external lifts have been removed. I also understand that QV's hull has been strengthened over the original Vista-class design for N. Atlantic operations in winter.

I read that the QM2 is saddled with that stumpy funnel due to air draft restricrion entering New York (the Verrazano Narrows Bridge)

Yes, an unfortunate side effect of QM2's design.
I think ARCADIA is due at Greenock next year.

Still think your 15th Sept. Picture of her is very impressive, Francis.

When this vessel was originally ordered Carnival Corp (who already owned Cunard) didnt have a competitor to P&O for the British market so they hastily commissioned a Vista class ship for Cunard to be based in Soton and be called Queen Victoria. Their plan was to have QM2 on the TAs and QE2 would be doing other voyages like Transpacifics etc etc.
The new ship would have been radically different in it's interiors etc to anything Cunard had at the time (QE2 & QM2). However midway through the build Carnival purchased P&O and realigned their products essentially making Cunard their "heritage" flagship cruise line. This meant that the vessel currently building for them was out of kilter with the Cunard image and she was transferred to P&O and renamed Arcadia. QV as we now know her was ordered later and delivered in late 2007 and was as Alasdair has already said strengthened and lenghtened (midships).

As we left on QV for our Med cruise back in August who should follow us down Soton Water but Arcadia. As I commented at the time - two QV's line astern!!

Personally I like the Vista class ships - the first ones I ever saw were Holland America - I think they are the best looking of current cruise ship designs - they are reasonably quick for cruisers as well - QV was regularly making just over 24knts during our holiday. Of the two Vistas which Cunard currently have I think QV is the best looking as the additional cabins added to the stern and the covered in sports deck on QE make her look ungainly.

One of my all time faves is wee Artemis (not Vista of course) - build like a brick outhouse and pleasant to the eye!!

Did you see my quick plug a bit ago for the ARTEMIS Book Gav??

Artemis, The Original Royal Princess by Andrew Sassoli-Walker and Sharon Poole. Published by Amberley Publishing, Stroud.
ISBN 978-1-4456-0094-9.

Loads of great pictues and I would be very surprised if you didn't recognise the odd person.
Shame Sarah Breton is not going to be on her to the very end but her prize is one of the bigger ships.

I think Christine Noble and Zak Coombs will see it to the end before moving on.
