BISMARCK- 70 years on

Post by Deepol » Fri May 27, 2011 10:01 am

On 27th May 1941 she was finally caught and sunk following an engagement with RODNEY, KING GEORGE V, NORFOLK and DORSETSHIRE. She dealt the final blows with torpedoes although it seems BISMARCK's crew did try scuttling.
Only 115 out of her 2200 complement were rescued, a hevy toll as well as that of HOOD.

Admiral Lutjens was remembered in that one of the German Navy's Charles F Adams destroyers was given his name.
This is her on a weekend visit to Yorkhill in 1991.

And it was all thanks to a Scots pilot John Moffat of the Fleet Air Arm whose torpedo from his Fairey Swordfish struck Bismarck's port stern jamming her rudder and thus denying her the safety of Saint Nazaire and allowing the Home Fleet to catch her.

I would like to mention that the first pic shows Adm. Lutjens inspecting the Prinz Eugen crew.
