GIBRALTAR - 240311: USS PROVIDENCE SSN 719 - Los Angeles Class - one of the four submarines that fired Tomahawk missiles at targets in Libya (others being USS SCRANTON & FLORIDA, and HMS TRIUMPH). In port for some R&R.

In the Strait having picked up the Pilot via a RHIB as the sea was rough... Was accompanied at all times by the Gibraltar Sqn (HMS SCIMITAR & RHIB), GDP Launch SIR REGINALD KERR & 2x RHIBs, and for a time also by the RGP Launch SIR WILLIAM JACKSON.

Nope, usually forget to bring it with me. I usually hold mt breath or used the wall / railing available. The other launch is the SIR CECIL SMITH.

Thanks TE! Daniel has the ability to hold his breath and apply a steady hand all at the same time...not that he hasn't a tripod and monopod! He is a real hip-shooter!

As a matter of interest, I opted to go to Europa Point for the Strait shots and then to the Upper Rock to catch the vessel coming into harbour. And yes, I used a Gorillapod to steady the aim and compensate for the distance and dull day we experienced. Addionally, we were able to take shots from different viewing points. Team effort!

Yes. most excellent pictures again from the pair of you in Gib.
Much appreciated Francis and Daniel, especially now in the full knowledge that it would be impossible for anything to enter either the harbour or bay, and the straits even, without your lenses giving us back in't UK so much to view, and in stereo almost.
Remarkable how much these US SSN's differ from ours.
Wonder where Triumph has skulked off to, she'll need to replenish her expended tomahawks.

Thanks E28. Yes, the difference is quite noticeable though when we had CONQUEROR ( and sisters) they seemed to be an American hull compressed at bow and stern. Thereafter the design shape changed. Initially also the siting of the diving planes was also another feature to watch.

For all we know TRIUMPH might turn up here, but these days the less advertised the visits of SSNs and SSBNs, as everywhere else, the better for security. We get to know by following the Gib Sqn (based on instinct I am sure!)into the Strait and seeing what their catch for the day is! Even the local tugs only get a few hours notice to attend. Still, we manage as best as we can and try to photograph all that is grey or black plus the other "clients" that use the Bay...

Aha, the tricks of your trade eh Francis. Fascinating stuff, but immensely rewarding too i imagine.
Have any of the Yankee Virginia boats extended you a courtesy yet.
They bear no resemblance to our comparable new Astute boats, but don't imagine you will see too much of those in the immediate future.
Well, we have only got the one
Stuck somewhere or other.

No Virginias as of yet but sub visits are becoming very rare these days. As for Astute, one can only hope to see one in these areas sometime soon but the same could be said of any of the Type 45s, still hoping to see one before the end of the year!

GIBRALTAR - HARBOUR & BAY - 280311: Well, USS PROVIDENCE spent the week-end plus here and left today at around 1400.
As per team arrangement, I again opted for the dizzy heights whilst Daniel went to see what he could shoot at sea-level!

An item of news appeared in the Spanish media which has confirmed what we have known since time began! In the last 15-20 yrs, with a more active Z-Berth than at present, the argument by Spain was always the risk of a nuclear accident. The anti-nuclear lobby in the hinterland organised all sorts of protests on their side of the border and on one occasion, with the aid of Greenpeace, managed to climb aboard one of HM Submarines.(HMS TIRELESS)..only promptly to be ejected forcefully by alert members of the crew. This was in the days before the boom was erected around ships in harbour ( I think all this started after the attack on USS COLE), and in the early morning light, a few small rib-type vessels crossed over from Spain and entered the harbour. They were seen by the Port Authority Lookout Tower and the alarm raised. The submarine crew went on full alert, but the deployment of local vessels took a little more time. This included all the local tugs as well as the Navy, Police and Port launches. Thereafter the security routine was changed and to date, nothing similar has happened.

On this occasion, a Spanish Senator which represents the Campo de Gibraltar, said it was insensitive of the Americans to come here, when Rota, just around th headland, would welcome the submarine (and its dollars)! Bang goes the worry about radiation!!! It was picked up locally as well by the Spaniards themselves and quite a few comments have appeared in the media about the statement made!

Finally, just as the submarine edged into the Strait, a Guardia Civil launch appeared at full throttle and approached the
sub, whereupon the Gibraltar Sqn immediately blocked its attempt to get near. Thereafter one of the Navy or Police RHIBs escorted the Guardia Civil vessel out of British Territorial waters.

Tugs EGERTON & SUN SWALE assisted in de-berthing (?) the submarine, followed by the usual escort of the Gibraltar Sqn and Police patrol boats and RHIBS.

Well, Francis and Daniel, you will not be seeing Triumph in Gib any time soon, as my piece in post 9 implied.
She arrived in Guzz, that's Devonport in Devonshire, England on Sat 2nd April.
So, none of the delights of a run ashore on your patch for the crew this time.
Great pics again from the pair of you.
Appreciated.

Thanks Sean.

Indeed, with the downscaling of the Fleet, we will need, in future, to buy grey filters to convert simple merchantmen into RFAs at the very least, or use one of those photo-programs to "create" warships from whatever else is afloat in the Bay! But we live in hope that SSNs or even SSBNs make an appearance in the not too distant future...especially the awaited taking of the first pictures of ASTUTE in Gibraltar.

Finally, and certainly should not form part of the USA posts activities, we are expecting greys to come into Gib in the next few days - Op Cougar.

No doubt about it, TE...although I don't think it was to paste pics on a website! More like "administrative pictures of the sub" as well as re-iterating that Gib has no territorial waters. Never ending story....

GIBRALTAR - 080411: USS FLORIDA SSGN 728.

Once again I opted for the "high road" to record these nowadays- rare visits by SSNs/SSBNs/SSGNs/SSKs. Notwithstanding the advantage of height for a more panoramic view (with less detail of the vessel in question), the Levanter cloud can play havoc with a photoshoot as it tends to hang quite low. When the "target" is moving, there is less time to make all the adjustments to the camera to secure decent shots - the cloud will suddenly open up for a few seconds and sunshine comes through and upsets the settings! Friday's arrival was helped and supported by a friendly sun and breeze!!! The decision to come into the harbour via the North Entrance also helped, but increased the "shooting time"! Though retired, I am still duty bound to carry out other chores other than playing QHM and PhotoShooter!!!

GIBRALTAR - 110411: USS FLORIDA SSGN 728. Departed via the North Entrance...in fact, this is the first time that I have seen a submarine of any type leave via this entrance. I assume that because of its length as well as there were a number of ships "obstructing the South Entrance, the Pilot will have opted and advised the Captain to exit the harbour via the North Entrance. This "exit routine" will have facilitated manoeuvring as she was already pointing Bows North...these pics were taken from my window....

I see the Spaniards are going ballistic (sorry) about these 2 Yankee nukes calling at Gib.
Ho hum.
Gib obviously still rates a far better run than Rota.
So, take Nota.
