Daniel and Francis, our men in Gib.
Presumably it has not escaped your notice how rarely French warships ever visit you.
True, they have their own bases close to hand, but do you recall the last one there, and when.
I made dozens of stops in Gib back in the 70's, and never saw one then, even though they are part of N.A.T.O. we rarely exercised with them, intentionally.
Know what i mean.

Sean

I lived in Gibraltar from 1978 to 1992 and in that time saw 4 French naval vessels in the Bay of Gibraltar. They were:

10/05/1983 FS MORSE S 638 (possibly part of Open Gate Exercise)
31/12/1983 FS ENSEIGNE DE VAISSEAU JACOUBET F 794
11/06/1985 FS VAUQUELIN D 628
01/06/1986 FS COMMANDANT L'HERMINIER F 791

One of the frigates only came into the bay to drop off a sick sailor.

My database also lists 4/10/1994 FS RUBIS S 601 (Info supplied by Daniel)

The reason for so few French naval visits was, I believe, political - a request from General Franco.

Over the years there were a number of French naval vessels, from tugs to aircraft carriers, passing the Rock.

Hi Peter, long time no see or speak!

I agree with you on the numbers that have come into Gibraltar. However, one question, when you say into the Bay, do you mean anchored or alongside, and if the latter, where would they have berthed, at The Tower? I say this because the last French Navy ship that I personally saw was actually tied up on the Western side of the Extension Jetty, and had come off an exercise. It is possible that Portuguese ships would have also come into port as would the Dutch at the same time.... sorry, but that is all I can remember of the top of my grey matter.

Incidentally, the last French ship seen was the JEANNE D'ARC in Cadiz a few years ago accompanied by a frigate.

Regards
Francis - No promises on obtaining the right results, but promise to do my best to get it!

Francis - Yes long time no speak or see (waiting for the big lottery win before I come back to the Rock)

All the French navy ships I saw were in the bay off the detached mole for a very short time - don't think they ever anchored. I have no idea when the last ship came alongside, but, have seen a picture in the National Geographic magazine (late 60s or early 70s) where there were some French sailors looking at the sights.

My last sighting of a French naval vessel was the LATOUCHE-TREVILLE, D 646, on the Clyde on 1 April this year. She was part of the Joint Warrior exercises which often have French participants.

Regards

Peter
