USS MISSOURI

Post by Deepol » Tue May 14, 2013 11:10 am

Mighty Mo was built by the Brooklyn Navy Yard being launched on January 29th 1944 and commissioned in June of the same year. She saw the last of the offensives against Japan being the platform on which the Japanese surrender was signed on September 2nd 1945. Sadly another conflict in Korea erupted in the early 1950s and she saw action during this time.
She was decommissioned as early as 1955 but in typical US tradition remained in suspended animation and was remarkably reactivated in 1984 under President Reagan's regime. He must have been a battleship enthusiast!
She saw further action in the Gulf War of 1991 but time caught up with her in 1992 when she was decommissioned for a second time but again remaining in readiness until finally taken off the Naval Register in 1995, a fantastic record.
Still around in 1998 she was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and has become a Museum Ship at Pearl Harbor

In the 1990s she was the subject of the film Under Siege and these are some shots from the opening credits which I took from the TV.....
I think it was also MISSOURI whose 15" gun barrel provided a precarious perch for Cher belting out Turn Back Time for the video of that song.

Another view courtesy Sergio and Anton Grimaldi of her in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Surrender Document.
