As the song goes--"Those were the days, my friend---".

In 1960 I did my last trip as a Cadet on Clan Stewart, which carried 12 passengers in 5 star luxury. 17 days from Liverpool to Cape Town, with a stop at Dakar for bunkers. The cost? £180 per person. Now that was value for money!

Indeed. When I look at the fares for some of these voyages and cruises in the 60s and 70s it's unreal how prices have rocketed!

Well have they in real terms??

Compare them to wages in the 60 and 70's.

I started work in 1968 with a take home pay of £6 a week and £1,000 a year was really good money.

Cruising now works out at somthing between £90 and £100 per day, depending on the shipping line and grade of Cabin.
