Sunderland's Big B*gg*rs

Post by Deepol » Wed Dec 19, 2012 1:21 pm

At the risk of stirring up bad memories again for at least one member a look at the 4 big 158000dwt OBO/bulkers built at the former JL Thompson yard at North Sands in Sunderland in the 70s and evidently known as "The Big Bs...."
. The first, NAESS/ NORDIC CRUSADER has already been dealt with so here's the next, NORDIC CHIEFTAIN completed in November 1974.
She drydocked at Greenock- pic elsewhere and ran some of her trials on the Clyde.
She became CAST HERON in 1981 and had a few more name changes before being scrapped as BULK ATHENA on the Alang Beaches in July 1994.

I had written to the yard to see if I could get on board during her fitting out but very apologetically they said no. Later they sent me pics of them both. I was always amazed at the number of hatches.

ORENDA BRIDGE was a pure bulker for Houlder Brothers and she was completed in March 1972. Following the break up of the Seabridge consortium she became ORENDA in 1977. Laid up on Loch Striven for a period she was sold in 1978 becoming THEODORA and finally as SERENA went to breakers at Valencia in November 1985.

The last was AURORA completed in November 1975 for P&O. They sold her on in 1990 when she became BERLISA and went to Alang in October 1999 as URGUP. The name of course was perpetuated in the passenger ship.
