Parting of the ways

The imposing Caledonian Railway signalbox at Bridge Street Junction outside Glasgow Central where the line to Paisley and the West Coast Main Line diverged.
Not sure when it was built but it was replaced with the new Glasgow Central box on Salkeld Street in 1960. Even that is replaced now.

German bulk carrier BERNHARD OLDENDORFF in floating drydock in Hamburg in 1972. Built at Vegesack in 1967 she became SAVOYDEAN III in 1989 and was broken up as that in China in 1992. Next door is new OCL container ship CARDIGAN BAY in for pre-trials work. She served till 1999 when she became MARION ...

Stanier Black 5 44866 at Motherwell in January 1965. Built by the LMS at Crewe she entered service in 1945 and was withdrawn from service in September 1967.

Found on an old floppy disk this photo of 58100 the 0-10-0 loco built in 1910 by the Midland Railway for banking duties on the Lickey Incline near Birmingham on the Midland route to Bristol and nicknamed Big Bertha. She was MR 2290 then 22290 under the LMS. BR renumbered her 58100 as the LMS numbers...

Manor Class locos 7812 ERLESTOKE MANOR and 7819 HINTON MANOR prepare to leave Shrewsbury in July 1965 with a Cambrian Coast train for Pwllheli.
Withdrawn at the end of 1965 both locos went to Barry but were rescued and are now fully restored and on the Severn Valley Railway nowadays.

More usually associated with coasters, Comben Longstaff had this 31000dwt bulker delivered from the North Sands yard at Sunderland in April 1979.
They did not have her for long, being sold in 1981 when she became APTMARINER. In 2002 she became the Chinese HONG TAI and was broken up in 2009.

Bank Line's general cargo ship fitting out from the Deptford yard at Sunderland in March 1979. She was sold on in 1987 becoming WESTMAN and had a reasonably long life as that arriving to be broken up at Alang on January 13th 2001. Nigerian National general cargo ship at Sunderland in 1987. Built at Ulsan in 1979 she was sold on in 1989 as LIMA I. As JUTHA KASAMAPHAN she was broken up at Alang arriving there on September 7th 2002.

MERSEY BRIDGE

Bibby Line bulk carrier fitting out at Sunderland in 1976. In 1977 following the collapse of the Seabridge consortium she was renamed CAMBRIDGESHIRE.
Sold in 1983 she became FESTIVAL and as PATMOS arrived at Aliaga on December 31st 2001 to be broken up.

On July 28th 1909 she foundered off the South African coast in a severe storm after sailing from Durban for the UK on the 27th July. No trace of the ship was ever found except apparently for a lifebelt washed on to a beach in New Zealand in 1912. All 211 passengers and crew lost their lives. However...

On the occasion of photographing the two Type 2s at Arrochar I had arrived on the 1035 from Queen Street to Oban. This was a summer extra train as far as I can recall and was worked by a Haymarket based Met Cam DMU triple set.

ASIAFREIGHTER was one of the 4 gas turbine powered container ships built in Germany 1971/1972. Her sisters were ASIALINER, EUROLINER and EUROFREIGHTER. CITY OF OXFORD 1948: John Brown, Clydebank

Ellerman general cargo ship which was later fitted out as the Personal Yacht for Sir John Ellerman. Launched on June 24th 1948 she was completed in December.
She traded till sold to Panamanian interests in 1975 becoming UNION ARABIA.
She arrived at Kaohsiung for breaking up on January 4th 1978.

In October 1986 Royal Mail exhibited their rebranded Travelling Post Office vehicles countrywide together if I recall an updated version of the classic Night Mail film.
This is the stock at Glasgow Central along with newly named Class 47 47549 ROYAL MAIL.

I'm not sure when this was put up but it's the LNER style sign on the ECML around Essendine commemorating MALLARD's achievement. I'm not sure if the speed was ever equalled but certainly never beaten.

PUERTO PRINCESA built in France at La Ciotat in 1970 as VILLE DE ROTTERDAM, taken in 1982 from Erskine Bridge.
She arrived at Kaohsiung on November 5th 1984 for scrapping.

She was one of a pair of SD14s, the other being WELSH TROUBADOR built at Sunderland by Austin and Pickersgill for Welsh Ore Carriers which I photographed in Sunderland after returning from trials in May 1973.
In 1978 she became AGATE and as SAIGON 2 was broken up in China in 2001.

For the British Tanker Company she was launched on June 22nd 1937 being completed in September. On May 24th 1958 she arrived at Rotterdam for breaking at Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.
